Frequently Asked Questions

For Producers

  • Do I need to be an experienced editor or videographer to create my own Mogulus channel?

Mogulus is breakthrough technology designed for all users, from simple, casual use to professional live production. All that is needed is the desire to communicate, inform, and entertain. If you can use blog publishing platforms like Blogger and Wordpress, you should have no problem using Mogulus Studio.
  • Can I embed my channel on other websites?

The Mogulus player can be embedded on most websites, on MySpace and is available as a Facebook app. Simply customize your player and paste the code into the HTML editor on the site or section of MySpace where you wish to embed it. For Facebook simply click the "embed this channel in my Facebook" link on the player menu and Facebook will walk you through the steps.
  • What do you mean when you call Mogulus "Live" Broadcasting?

When we say live, we really mean "live"! Our unique, patent-pending technology allows Mogulus to virtually eliminate the now infamous 20-second delay common in the live streaming process. With Mogulus, the viewer experiences what the producer has put on the air in less than one second. Everyone watching your channel sees exactly the same thing you see as you produce it. Think of the possibilities: you can use your web cam to cover a "live" news or sports event as it happens, spontaneously introduce and play back prepared clips, and switch back to your live camera with ease.
  • How much bandwidth do I need to produce content in the Mogulus studio?

For your production needs, we recommend 700 Kbps or more upstream bandwidth to stream in high quality though in most cases using a lower quality setting you can get by with less. You can use this test to test your connection speed. For more efficient encoding, to specify the bitrate and other settings, we recommend using Flash Media Encoder
  • Can other producers contribute to my channel in real-time?

The Mogulus studio is the ultimate collaborative multi-user application. Invite others to your production team, log into the studio together and you will see each each camera show up. Each producer can then cue cameras, manage clips, moderate chat and control all other live production tasks.
  • Where do I get the content for my channel?

You can gather content from video-on-demand web sites such as YouTube. Most videos on these sites include a license for rebroadcast. (However, be very careful: some content may have been loaded without permission from the content owner and may not be copyright cleared. If you have doubts about the origin of some content, don't use it.)

Any content that was produced by people you invited to participate on your channel is clear for you to broadcast. You also have a default license to use and rebroadcast their image. These are conditions that all Mogulus users must agree to, as outlined in the terms and conditions of use.
  • Do I need to worry about copyright issues?

In addition to your own original programming, you can also use existing copyright-free content on your broadcast. It is your responsibility to make sure the content you broadcast contains no copyright infringements. Mogulus will shut down any account that is reported to be breaching content copyrights.
  • What's the best format to use when uploading high video quality?

For best results, we recommend using VP6 encoded to Mogulus specs using the "use file as master" option. If not doing this we recommend .mov (Quicktime) or .wmv (Windows Media) with MPEG4 or H264 compression and it will be transcoded. The video should have at least 320x240 resolution.
  • What is the maximum number of viewers who can watch my channel?

We currently don't have any theoretical upper limit for the number of viewers on a channel. The maximum number of concurrent viewers that we've observed on one channel is 46,000. The total peak number of concurrent viewers our network was 87,178 on election night 2008. If you are expecting more than 10,000 viewers, please contact us so that we can plan our capacity accordingly.
  • I have forgotten my password. How do I log back into the site?

To retrieve your password, click the "Forgot your password?" link on the Mogulus Studio login page and enter your username and email address. We will send you a temporary password you can use to log in. Once you are back in, you will be able to change the interim password using the "change password" option.

  • How do I change the initial ticker text and the "Your Channel is now LIVE" screen?

If your viewers have a very low connection and you are streaming live from your camera, try going to Settings located next to your camera preview on the left side of the Broadcast live screen, and reduce your image quality to "low". You can also use Flash Media Encoder for better performance which will allow you to specify the bitrate.

Or you can remove the logo from your studio by clicking on Remove button next to the logo in the Configure Channel tab-subtab My Channelpage where you first uploaded your logo.

  • Can I connect external devices like DVD players or video mixers to my computer and use them as a source to broadcast live instead of a webcam?

In order to capture video from an analog source you will need an analog/digital converter such as a Canopus or a Dazzle.

These devices will allow you to input an analog RCA or S-Video signal and will output a digital signal to your computer via USB. In many cases these devices are not compatible with Flash so you may need to use Flash Media Encoder or a capture program like WebcamMax to broadcast from this source inside Mogulus studio.

Please note that some Dazzle Devices are not meant for streaming and may cause audio loss. Please check with the manufacturer before attempting to use one of these devices with Mogulus.
